How to Learn Amharic
The fastest way to learn Amharic is to learn the Fidäl alphabet first, build core everyday vocabulary, study basic grammar, and practice speaking daily with real conversations — ideally through structured lessons rather than random resources.
1. Start with the Fidäl alphabet
Amharic is written in the Ge’ez script, known as Fidäl. Learning the base consonant shapes and how each of the seven vowel orders changes them makes reading, spelling and pronunciation much easier later on.

2. Build high-frequency vocabulary
Focus on words you will actually use — greetings, numbers, family terms and everyday phrases — before moving on to less common vocabulary.
3. Study basic grammar
Learn how pronouns, verb conjugation and word order work in Amharic so you can build your own sentences instead of only repeating memorized phrases.
4. Practice speaking from day one
Reading and listening are useful, but speaking is what builds real fluency. Practice out loud regularly, even in short sessions, using real conversation scenarios.
5. Stay consistent
A few minutes of daily practice across all four areas — alphabet, vocabulary, grammar and speaking — will get you further than occasional long study sessions.
